TL;DR: What This Means for FSP Customers
- U.S. electricity use set a record in 2025, and the EIA expects new records in 2026 and 2027 after roughly a decade of flat demand. AI data centers are the biggest driver.
- The IEA expects data centers to account for almost half of U.S. demand growth through 2030, using more power than all energy-intensive manufacturing combined.
- An aging grid cannot absorb that load fast enough. Interconnection queues, volatile AI loads and equipment lead times of up to 80 weeks for medium-voltage switchgear now decide when new capacity comes online.
- FSP shortens the path from utility to rack: Optima switchgear from 208V to 38kV, factory-tested e-houses and lead times as short as 15 weeks, built in America with $3 billion in available capacity.
The Supercycle in Numbers
For most of the last decade, U.S. electricity demand barely moved. That era is over. The EIA reports a record 4,195 billion kWh of consumption in 2025 and expects new highs in 2026 and 2027, capping the largest four-year increase in demand since 2000.
AI is the engine. Goldman Sachs forecasts U.S. data center power demand more than doubling, from 31 GW in 2025 to 66 GW in 2027. In 2026, commercial electricity demand, the category that includes data centers, is expected to pass residential demand for the first time on record.
The IEA sees the trend running through the decade. Data centers are on track to drive almost half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030 and to consume more power than aluminum, steel, cement and chemicals production combined.

What Buyers Should Do Now
Demand forecasts keep moving up, and the projects that win are the ones that secure power equipment first. For developers, EPCs and hyperscalers, that starts with the distribution package.
- Lock the distribution package early. Bring switchgear and PDU specs into the design phase so long-lead items never set the energization date.
- Plan for denser, more volatile loads. Specify transfer, metering and protection with AI-scale load swings in mind.
- Move work into the factory. Prefabricated, factory-tested power rooms cut on-site labor and sequencing risk.
